How I Prepare Each Lesson (日本語は下にあります)

People often tell me my lessons feel natural and well-balanced — the vocabulary is useful, the topic is interesting, and the class flows smoothly. But what they don’t see is the planning that goes on behind the scenes. And for me, the hardest part is always the same:

Finding the right subject.

Sometimes Students Know What They Want

If a student makes a request, I’ll build a lesson around it. One student might want to practice a grammar point — for example, tag questions like “It’s cold today, isn’t it?” Another might ask for a customs role-play to prepare for an overseas trip. These lessons are tailored to the individual.

生徒さんがリクエストしてくれると、とても助かります。ある人は「付加疑問（isn’t it?）」のような文法を練習したいと言いますし、別の人は「入国審査のロールプレイをしたい」と言ってくれます。それぞれの生徒さんに合わせた、オーダーメイドのレッスンです。

Sometimes Inspiration Comes from a Casual Chat

Other times, students say something in class that sparks an idea. One student loves bowling, so I created a full lesson around it. Another is performing at a jazz festival, so I designed a lesson all about jazz — the music, the instruments, and how to talk about a performance.

生徒さんとの何気ない会話からヒントをもらうこともあります。 「ボウリングが好き」と言っていた生徒さんには、**ボウリングがテーマのレッスン**を作りました。 「ジャズフェスティバルに出る」という方には、**ジャズの歴史や楽器、演奏の表現**を学ぶレッスンを作りました。

If There’s No Request, I Look Around

If no one makes a request, I turn to the season or the news. Right now it’s spring, so I might use topics like cherry blossoms or spring cleaning. With Expo 2025 coming up, that's another fun and relevant topic. Honestly, I really appreciate suggestions!

リクエストがないときは、季節や最近の話題からテーマを探します。 春なら「お花見」や「春の大掃除」、**大阪万博（Expo 2025）**もいいトピックですね。 実は…**皆さんの提案をいつも大歓迎しています！**

Role-Plays Are the Heart of My Lessons

Once I have the topic, I create at least three role-plays to match it. If it’s a class of three women — like my jazz student’s class — I write a scene with three characters talking about jazz. Each role-play is made to fit the students.

トピックが決まったら、**最低3つのロールプレイ**を作ります。 例えば、ジャズが好きな生徒さんが3人いるクラスなら、3人のキャラクターがジャズについて話すシーンを考えます。 ロールプレイは、そのクラスの**生徒さんに合わせて作ります**。

Next Comes Vocabulary — Always 16 or 24 Words

From the role-plays, I extract useful or tricky words.Beginners get 16 words, and advanced learners get 24. I always include a mix: some easy, some medium, and one challenging word to spark curiosity.

ロールプレイの中から、**重要な単語や少し難しい単語**を選びます。 初心者は16語、上級者は24語が基本です。 簡単な単語を半分、あとは少し難しめに。そして必ず1語、**「おっ？」と思うような難しい単語**を入れます。

Grammar That Matches the Topic

I choose a grammar point that suits the mood of the lesson.For example, jazz is expressive and sensual — so we might practice adverbs:“She sings beautifully.” “He plays the trumpet skillfully.”

トピックに合わせて、文法ポイントも選びます。 例えば、ジャズは表現豊かなので、「副詞（〜に、〜く）」を使った文を練習します。 例： She sings beautifully. He plays the trumpet skillfully.

Then I Write Discussion Questions

Every lesson ends with a conversation. I prepare 3 to 5 discussion questions to fit the topic and level.For beginners: “What did you do yesterday?”For advanced: “What genre of music do you prefer and why?”

レッスンの最後には**ディスカッションタイム**があります。 毎回3〜5個の質問を用意して、生徒さんが自由に話せる時間を作ります。 初心者には：*What did you do yesterday?*（昨日は何をしましたか？） 上級者には：*What genre of music do you prefer and why?*（どんな音楽ジャンルが好きですか？なぜですか？）

Pictures Bring It to Life

Next, I choose images that match the topic. This helps create a mood and makes vocabulary easier to understand.

その後は、**トピックに合った画像**を選びます。 視覚的に理解しやすくなるだけでなく、雰囲気も伝わりやすくなります。

Then Comes the Handout & Slideshow

I make a printable handout — usually 2 pages — that includes vocabulary, grammar, role-plays, and discussion questions. Then I design a slideshow for the TV monitor.

I love art and design, so this is my favorite part… but it can take a few hours, so I try to prepare it a few days before the class.

ハンドアウトは2ページくらいで、語彙・文法・ロールプレイ・ディスカッションが入っています。 そして、テレビモニターで使う**スライドも作成**します。 私はデザインが大好きなので、ここが一番楽しい部分。でも数時間かかるので、数日前から準備します。

Audio for Extra Practice (Even If I Hate My Voice!)

If the vocabulary is hard to pronounce, I record audio for students to listen to at home.I don’t like the sound of my voice… so I recently started adding background music to make the recordings a little more pleasant — and maybe help with memory, too!

発音が難しい単語があるときは、**音声を録音**してウェブサイトにアップしています。 自分の声はちょっと苦手なので（笑）、最近は**BGMをつけて**聞きやすくなるよう工夫しています。記憶にも残りやすくなればいいなと思っています。
